Jul 21

No account. Just open it and make.

Modulate now opens straight into the full editor: every effect, every layer type, your own images and video, no signup. Your media stays on your machine until you save, and signing up turns the session into your first project.

  • The complete editor, not a trimmed demo
  • Import your own images, video, and GIFs; nothing uploads until you save
  • Sign up from inside the editor and keep everything you made
  • Free exports lose the watermark
Jul 13

Turn any image into a pixel poster.

Shadows, midtones, and highlights each become flat pixel blocks on their own grid, with a color and an outline per band. A photo goes in, a screen-print style poster comes out, and it runs live on video too.

  • Highlights, Midtones, and Shadows thresholds to carve where each band begins
  • Fill, Stroke, Stroke Weight, and Pixel Size per band
  • Mismatched block sizes so the bands interlock instead of stacking
  • Background Opacity to float the blocks over the layers beneath
Jul 10

Star Glow

New effect

Put star-filter glints on every highlight.

The cross-screen lens filter, live on video: bright points sprout thin rays that fade along their length, with a hot glowing core. Built in linear light like Glow, so the rays read as light instead of haze.

  • Points for the star shape, from a clean cross to a full starburst
  • Length and Angle to stretch and aim the star
  • Spectral for diffraction color fringing along each ray
  • Core for the hot center, Threshold to pick which highlights sparkle
  • Tintable glint Color
Jul 7

The editor's effects, free in your browser.

Eight free tools built on the same GPU engine as the full editor, so the results are identical to what you get inside Modulate. Everything runs on your machine and your media never uploads anywhere.

  • VHS, CRT, Halftone, Dither, Datamosh, Gradient Map, Invert, and Blob Tracker
  • No signup, no watermark on the tools, no upload
  • One click from any tool into the full editor
Jul 7

Meet Datamosh

New effect

Break your video the way codecs do.

True block-matching motion estimation, the same mechanics real compression corruption comes from. Motion drags the image apart, holds it, and heals back to clean video on your terms.

  • Melt and Heal controls for how the image falls apart and recovers
  • Block Size, from chunky MPEG blocks to fine smears
  • Threshold to set how much motion it takes to trigger the mosh
  • Smear and Diffusion for the drag and drift of held pixels
  • Reset Every for rhythmic, loopable corruption
Jul 7

Melt the image into sorted streaks.

A true GPU compute sort, not an approximation: full-length contiguous spans, sorted in realtime, even at high resolution.

  • Sort by Brightness, Hue, or Saturation
  • Affect Highlights or Shadows, with a Threshold to pick where spans start
  • Angle control to sort in any direction, not just down
  • Max Streak and Randomness for broken, organic spans
  • Reverse to flip the sort direction

Slit-Scan v2

Improvement

Trails that survive a frame-rate change.

Duration is now set in seconds instead of frames, so a two-second smear means two seconds at any frame rate. Existing projects keep working exactly as they were.

Jul 6

An icon library, built in

Feature

Drop icons straight onto the canvas.

Search thousands of icons, powered by the Noun Project. Icons arrive as real layers, so you can recolor them, animate them, mask with them, and run any effect over them.

Jul 3

Grain v2

Improvement

Grain that behaves like film stock.

Reworked film grain with a more organic response curve. Grain now sits inside the image the way film does instead of reading as noise laid on top.

  • Film stock presets from 65mm down to Super 8, plus Tri-X black and white
  • Separate Shadow, Midtone, and Highlight response
  • Chroma control for color grain versus pure luminance grain
  • Its own Frame Rate, so grain can stutter independently of the footage
Jul 2

Better 3D materials

Improvement

Deeper, more physical 3D surfaces.

A materials pass across 3D layers, from surfaces to lighting to extrusion.

  • Matcap materials rebuilt with two-layer textures
  • Environment lighting for 3D layers
  • Sturdier text extrusion on dense display fonts
Jul 1

Templates

Feature

Start from a look, make it yours.

Every template opens fully editable: the layers, effects, and animation are all there to pull apart, restyle, and remix into your own project. Also the quickest way to learn how a look is built.

Spherize

New effect

Bend any layer through a lens.

Bulge, pinch, and lens-distort around a draggable center point. Keep it gentle for subtle lens character, or push it hard for full fisheye.

  • Center and Radius set right on the canvas
  • Positive for bulge, negative for pinch
  • Animate the center and the distortion travels with it
Jun 27

A tidier projects page

Improvement

Tame a messy project list.

Sort your projects, and select several at once to delete or restore in bulk. Cleaning up after a heavy experimenting session takes seconds instead of a click per project.

Jun 25

Bring your own fonts

Feature

Your type, in every look.

Upload your own font files and use them in text layers alongside Google Fonts. Your fonts get the same shaping, animation, and effects treatment as everything else, so brand type slots straight into any look.

Jun 23

Shrinkwrap

New effect

Vacuum-seal your layer in plastic film.

Moulds a glossy film over the image, embossed with real highlights and self-shadowing. Tighten it down and the film pulls into the contours like actual packaging.

  • Five material presets: Chrome, Gold, Pewter, Clay, and Matte
  • Tightness and Depth for how hard the film pulls into the image
  • Full lighting rig: Light, Ambient, Shadows, and Rim Light
  • Roughness and Material Mix for the surface character
  • Detail control for fine embossing, plus Invert and Tint
Jun 23

Slit-Scan

New effect

Give every pixel its own moment in time.

A gradient or control map decides how far back each part of the image reaches, melting footage across recent frames. The experimental-film classic, live and tweakable.

  • Gradient or Control Map time source
  • Linear, Radial, Mirror, and Wave gradient shapes
  • Sweep for animated scanning motion
  • Time span, angle, scale, and center all adjustable
Jun 22

Echo

New effect

Motion that leaves a trail.

A decaying trail of recent frames follows anything that moves. Dial it short for a subtle motion smear or long for ghostly light-painting trails.

  • Echoes count for how many past frames stack up
  • Spacing to spread the trail through time
  • Decay for how quickly the ghosts fade
Jun 22

Meet Field

New effect

Generate living, evolving texture.

An evolving procedural field as a layer. Use it as a backdrop, texture under type, or raw material for other effects to chew on; pair it with Displacement Map and the whole canvas comes alive.

  • Four field types: Clouds, Marble, Flow, and Cells
  • Cell patterns in Cells, Cracks, or Dots with Round, Diamond, or Square metrics
  • Warp, Detail, and Roughness to shape the character
  • Evolution Speed with a Loop mode for seamless cycles
  • Seed control for repeatable variations
Jun 22

Stroke

New effect

Outline anything, properly.

Outlines that trace the actual silhouette, so text, cutouts, and odd shapes get real contour lines rather than a box.

  • Smooth or Pixelated stroke styles
  • Chunky pixel strokes with Block Size and Block Angle
  • Offset controls for drop-shadow style displaced outlines
  • Multiple strokes from a single effect
Jun 22

Warp one layer with another.

Bright and dark areas of a map layer push the pixels around, which covers everything from heat haze and frosted glass to full melts. Point it at a moving layer and the distortion comes alive.

  • Drive displacement from Luminance, Red + Green, or Alpha
  • Independent Amount X and Amount Y
  • Midpoint control for where zero displacement sits
  • Clamp, Wrap, Mirror, or Transparent edge handling
Jun 22

Export in 4K

Improvement

Full-resolution renders, up to 4096 x 2160.

Video export now goes up to 4K H.264, with every effect rendering at full resolution. Big enough for delivery, not just previews.

Jun 19

Sharpen

New effect

Put the edge back into soft footage.

Crisp up soft sources and give renders extra bite, without the telltale glow of overdone sharpening.

  • Amount and Radius for the strength and scale of the effect
  • Threshold to sharpen edges while leaving flat areas and grain alone
Jun 18

Slip layers in time

Feature

Move the footage, keep the keyframes.

Slide a layer's content in time without moving its keyframes, or shift both together. Lining up a specific video moment against your animation no longer means rebuilding the keyframes around it.

Jun 17

Track an object, pin any effect to it.

Motion tracking now hosts full effect chains: attach effects to a tracked region and they follow the subject through the shot. Blur a face, glitch a passing car, pin a glow to a dancer.

  • Any effect chain can attach to a tracked box
  • Multiple tracked regions per composition, each with its own effects
  • Live match preview while you set up the track
Jun 17

GIFs welcome

Feature

Drop GIFs straight onto the canvas.

Animated GIFs import like any other media. The frames play on the timeline and take effects exactly like video, so found footage and reaction loops go straight into a composition.

Jun 16

Posterize

New effect

Collapse gradients into hard steps.

Reduce colors to flat bands for print, screen-burn, and scanner looks. A great partner for Dither and Halftone.

  • Levels control for how many bands survive
  • RGB or Luminance mode
  • Gamma and Amount for shaping and blending the result
Jun 16

Save as new project

Feature

Branch a project before the risky move.

Fork your current state into a fresh project without losing the original. Keep both versions and come back to whichever won.

Jun 12

The pixel look, with real control.

Rebuild the image as a grid of solid blocks, with enough control to feel designed rather than defaulted.

  • Point, Average, or Dominant color sampling per block
  • Aspect and Rotation for non-square, angled grids
  • Brick-style row Stagger and a movable Origin
Jun 12

Pixel Art

New effect

Turn footage into a hand-made sprite.

Redraw anything at a tiny resolution with a retro palette, ordered dithering, and optional dark outlines. Console-era looks, live on video.

  • Palettes: Game Boy, PICO-8, NES, CGA, 1-Bit, or your own custom colors
  • Bayer 2x2, 4x4, and 8x8 ordered dithering
  • Outline pass with its own color and threshold
  • Contrast and Saturation tuned for the low-color look
Jun 12

Mosaic

New effect

Tile the image like real inlay.

Shaped cells with grout spacing and tone-driven tile sizing keep it reading like craft rather than a filter. Beautiful on portraits and architectural shots.

  • Six tile shapes: Square, Circle, Hexagon, Triangle, Diamond, and Crystal
  • Gap, Rounding, and Jitter for hand-laid irregularity
  • Tone Scale sizes tiles by the image underneath
  • Solid, Transparent, or Source background between tiles
Jun 12

Adaptive Pixelate

New effect

Pixels that know where the detail is.

Blocks split where the image needs them: faces and edges stay crisp while flat areas go chunky. The quadtree look straight out of generative art, re-solving itself in realtime as the video moves.

  • Subdivide by Detail, Luminance, or a movable Focus point
  • Subdivisions and Sensitivity for how deep the grid splits
  • Show Grid overlay with its own width and color
Jun 12

Meet Resonance

New effect

Sand patterns from a vibrating plate.

Grains gather along the nodal lines of a standing wave, exactly like the physics-demo videos. Sweep the frequency and the pattern snaps from one resonance to the next.

  • Square or Circular plate
  • Frequency sweep through the resonance series
  • Grain Size, Density, Cohesion, and Scatter for the sand physics
  • Agitation to keep the grains alive
Jun 12

Micrographics

New effect

Instant sci-fi HUD texture.

A packed sheet of small technical graphics: data readouts, dials, codes, barcodes, and markers on an aligned grid. Everything on the sheet animates.

  • Technical, Graphic, Label, or Mix styles
  • Fullness and Accents control the density of the sheet
  • Corner marks: Crosses, Crop, Brackets, or Dots
  • Static, Synced, or Scattered animation timing
Jun 11

Light and dark themes

Feature

An editor for both bright and dark rooms.

A full light theme and a toggle to match your system. Every panel, control, and surface got the sweep, so neither mode feels like an afterthought.

Jun 10

Fold the canvas into symmetry.

Reflect and tile the image with draggable on-canvas handles, from a single clean mirror line to full kaleidoscope segmentation.

  • Kaleidoscope, Mirror H, Mirror V, and Quad modes
  • Sides control for the segment count
  • Spin and Zoom for continuous animated motion
  • Center and Rotation set right on the canvas
Jun 9

Stock photos, built in

Feature

Real imagery, zero round-trips.

Search Pexels stock photos from the add media dialog and drop them straight onto the canvas. Ideal for quickly testing a look against real imagery.

Jun 5

Contour

New effect

Turn tone into topographic lines.

Luminance traced into clean line work, like elevation lines on a map following the tones of your image. Crisp, plotter-style output that moves with video.

  • Levels control for how many contour bands appear
  • Line Width and Smoothing for the drawing style
  • Wobble and Wobble Scale for a hand-drawn quality
  • Ink and Paper colors, with a transparent-paper option
Jun 4

Riso is here

New effect

The riso print look, separated into real inks.

Tone separates into ink channels and composites back like an actual risograph pass. Zine energy, no drum cylinder required.

  • Two to four ink channels, each with its own color, density, and threshold
  • Preset ink pairings like Blue + Pink + Yellow, Pink + Teal, and Violet + Aqua
  • Per-channel Registration drift for that slightly-off riso alignment
  • Stochastic, Halftone, or Line dot shapes
  • Synthesized paper with grain, fiber, and warmth
Jun 3

Grid

New effect

Structure as a layer.

Animated grids and guides you can put under type, over footage, or behind a whole composition. Layer it in and everything suddenly looks intentional.

  • Line Grid, Rectangle, and Circle shapes, filled or outlined
  • Recursive subdivision with Depth, Balance, and Aspect Bias
  • Seeded randomness for endless layout variations
  • Gap and Stroke Width for the drawing style
Jun 2

Paper

New effect

Give pixels a paper history.

Crumple, fold, and texture layers like printed paper, with real scanned stocks or a synthesized mode when you need fiber and tooth without sourcing a scan.

  • Scanned stocks: craft, black, folded, stained, and packing papers
  • Synthesized mode with Grain, Fiber, and Warmth controls
  • Multiply, Overlay, Soft Light, or Screen blending
  • Scale, Rotation, and Offset to place the texture

Mask with any layer

Feature

Any layer can be a mask.

Text, shapes, images, anything: a layer can now mask the layers beneath it. Type carrying video inside it is one checkbox away, and animated masks open up reveal after reveal.

May 29

Glow

New effect

Make the bright parts bloom.

Soft halos around bright areas, like lights through a hazy lens. Scales from a subtle sheen on highlights to full neon signage.

  • Threshold picks which highlights bloom
  • Radius and Intensity for the size and strength of the halo
  • Tintable glow Color
May 29

Wave

New effect

Put motion into anything.

Moving distortion in three flavors: swirling turbulence, rolling directional waves, or rings spreading from a point. One of the quickest ways to make a still feel alive.

  • Turbulence, Waves, and Rings types
  • Sine, Triangle, Square, and Cross waveforms
  • Loop mode for seamless cycles
  • Mirror, Clamp, or Wrap edge handling
  • Warp, Complexity, and Roughness for the turbulence character
May 29

Threshold

New effect

Two colors, total control.

A hard cutoff between light and dark, the foundation of xerox, screen-print, and high-contrast zine looks. Pairs beautifully with Riso and Halftone.

  • Custom Foreground and Background colors
  • Fill, Edges, or Both modes with a dedicated outline color
  • Extra Lines with adjustable spacing for a screen-printed read
  • Blend modes including Multiply, Screen, Overlay, and Soft Light
May 27

Directional Blur

New effect

Streak the frame in one direction.

Motion blur from a pan that never happened. Animate the angle and length and still footage starts to move; great for speed, better for abstraction.

  • Amount for the streak length
  • Angle to aim it anywhere
May 27

Radial Blur

New effect

Aim the energy at a point.

Smear the image around a center: a zoom rush, a spin, or both at once. Instant intensity for beat drops and impact frames.

  • Independent Zoom and Spin amounts
  • Center dragged right on the canvas
May 27

Lens Blur

New effect

Bokeh, not mush.

Blur like a real camera lens: out-of-focus highlights bloom into shaped bokeh instead of washing out to grey. Depth and atmosphere for flat digital sources.

  • Aperture Blades and Roundness shape the bokeh
  • Highlight boost for blooming light sources
  • Edge control and blade Rotation for the lens character
May 27

Tilt-Shift

New effect

Miniaturize the real world.

A strip of focus with everything else falling away, the trick that makes real scenes look like miniatures. The focus band sits wherever you put it, so it doubles as a general cinematic focus pull.

  • Linear or Radial focus shape
  • Focus Width, Falloff, and Tilt for the band geometry
  • Gaussian or Bokeh quality, with blades and highlight bloom in Bokeh mode
May 27

Posterize Time

New effect

Stutter the motion on purpose.

Drops the frame rate of everything beneath it, so motion plays back as a stop-motion stutter. Classic music-video and animation hold-frame energy from a single Frame Rate control.

May 21

Curves

New effect

The grade starts here.

Precise tone and color control: drag points on a curve to brighten, darken, or add contrast, overall or per channel. The fastest route to a signature color feel.

May 21

Stipple

New effect

Ink dots that follow the light.

The image redrawn as a field of ink dots, large and dense in shadow, small and sparse in light. The classic engraving and newsprint look, live on video. Gorgeous on faces.

  • Foreground and Background colors
  • Cell Size and Density for the dot field
  • Crack and Distortion for organic, hand-inked texture
  • Brightness, Contrast, and Gamma to shape the tonal response
May 20

Gradient Map

New effect

Recolor by brightness.

Luminance remapped to any color ramp: shadows take one end, highlights the other. The fastest route to duotone, thermal, and infrared looks, and the backbone of a hundred album covers.

  • Fully editable gradient stops
  • Presets including Nebula, Heatmap, Cyber, and Mono Orange
  • Repeat and Ping-pong for banded, cyclic ramps
  • Input Range to grade only part of the tonal scale
May 13

Split the channels like a bad lens.

Red, green, and blue drift apart so edges fringe with color. Keep it low for analog authenticity or push it past realism into full glitch fringing.

  • Radial or Directional mode
  • Movable Center with Falloff for lens-accurate fringing
  • Defocus to soften the split channels
May 13

Meet Metablobs

New effect

Melt the image into liquid blobs.

Rounded blobs that flow and merge like drops of ink. Silhouettes stay pixel-crisp while the shapes gloop together, so the result reads graphic rather than blurry. Mesmerizing on type.

  • Match by Luma or Color to choose what turns into blobs
  • Merge and Size for how aggressively drops fuse
  • Pixel Scale for chunky, lo-fi blobs
  • Solid, Transparent, or Source background
May 13

Reeded Glass

New effect

Refraction through real flutes.

Ribbed glass that bends and repeats the image like a textured shower door, refracted with a real index-of-refraction model rather than a smear.

  • Five profiles: Round, Wedge, Circle Grid, Diamond, and Cross
  • Index of Refraction and Thickness for physical accuracy
  • Built-in Chromatic Aberration and Frost
  • Irregularity and Per-Reed Jitter so the flutes feel manufactured, not cloned
May 12

Bouncing Text

New effect

Type that bounces like the screensaver.

A line of text in constant motion around the canvas, with trailing echoes if you want them. Nostalgic, hypnotic, and surprisingly useful for lockups and loops.

  • Ricochet, Drift, and Orbit motion modes
  • Cycles per loop for perfectly loopable exports
  • Chaos and Stagger to break up the regularity
  • Echo trails with count, spacing, fade, and Add or Screen blending
  • Full type controls: font, weight, size, fill, and stroke
May 12

Edge Warp

New effect

Squeeze the frame through curved glass.

The image pulls toward the center while a stretched, magnified band wraps the edges. A strong frame for type and product shots, and an easy way to make a static image feel dimensional.

  • Movable Center and Shape controls
  • Falloff for how quickly the edge band takes over
  • Dispersion for prismatic color splitting in the stretch
May 12

Pattern Grid

New effect

Halftone with icons instead of dots.

A grid of small glyphs over the image, each one chosen or scaled by the brightness underneath. Swap the glyphs and the same footage becomes a totally different poster.

  • Sixteen built-in glyphs, from dots and rings to crosses and slashes
  • Fill by scaling glyphs or swapping between them
  • Global, Per-Cell Sync, or Per-Cell Phased animation
  • Edge detection to trace outlines in glyphs
  • From-source color, per-shape tint, or flat color
May 6

NTSC

New effect

Broadcast decay, modeled from the signal.

Analog TV artifacts built from how the signal path actually degrades, not noise pasted on top, so the smear and static move like a real tube TV.

  • NTSC and PAL standards
  • Ringing, Sharpness, and Smear from the composite signal model
  • Chroma crawl with adjustable speed
  • Snow, Hum, and RF interference, each with its own control
May 4

ASCII

New effect

Redraw the frame in type.

Live text characters, with brightness picking each glyph. The terminal-art classic, running in realtime on video.

  • 17 character sets, from Blocks and Braille to Katakana and Matrix, plus custom characters
  • Any font at nine weights from Thin to Black
  • From-source or custom color, with cycling color modes
  • Edge Lines and Edges Only modes for contour-drawn type
  • Solid, Transparent, or Source background
