Contour effect

The contour effect redraws an image as evenly spaced lines tracing its levels of brightness, exactly the way a topographic map traces levels of elevation. Treat luminance as terrain and every line marks where the image crosses one step of it: tight bands where light changes fast, wide open spacing where it changes slowly. The result reads as cartography of the frame, and on video the map redraws itself as the light moves.

Contour lines are one of cartography’s great inventions: a way to print three dimensions on two. Surveyors began joining points of equal depth and equal height in the eighteenth century, and the convention stuck because it encodes so much so legibly, altitude in position, steepness in spacing, landform in shape. That legibility is why the aesthetic escaped maps. Outdoor brands, festival posters, and title sequences borrow contour lines when they want something to feel charted and measured, terrain-like even when the subject is a face.

The effect performs a literal translation of the surveyor’s method. The image’s luminance becomes the elevation model, the tonal range is divided into equal steps, and a line is drawn wherever the image crosses one, so a soft gradient becomes wide, calm bands while a hard shadow edge packs lines together like a cliff face on a trail map. Smoothing the luminance first is what keeps the map plausible: it rolls the pixel-level detail into hills the lines can actually wrap around, and deciding how much terrain survives is most of the art direction.

The drawing itself stays graphic. Lines keep a constant width whether they cross a plateau or a precipice, ink and paper are explicit colors, so the same footage renders as fine-line survey sheet, blueprint, or glow-on-black, and the paper can drop away entirely to leave floating lines over whatever sits beneath. A wobble control roughens the mathematics with a hand-surveyed waver. Applied to video, the terrain is alive: every gesture and light change re-carves the landscape, which is something no printed map ever did.

How is contour different from a threshold effect?

Threshold slices the image at a single brightness level and fills the two sides with flat color, one hard boundary. Contour generalizes the idea to many levels at once and draws only the boundaries, as lines, leaving the regions between them empty. Threshold gives silhouettes; contour gives the whole terrain between the silhouettes.

Why do contour effects smooth the image first?

Because pixel-level detail makes terrible terrain. Noise and fine texture would shatter the lines into specks and scribbles, so the luminance is blurred into rolling forms before the levels are traced, exactly as a cartographer generalizes real ground into drawable landforms. More smoothing gives calm, sparse maps; less keeps the terrain intricate and busy.
