Sharpen effect

The sharpen effect increases the perception of focus by boosting local contrast where the image already changes: edges get a brighter bright side and a darker dark side, and the eye reads the steeper transition as crisper detail. The standard machinery is the unsharp mask, a technique older than digital imaging, and it is an honest one: it makes real detail pop rather than inventing detail that was never captured.

Unsharp masking is a darkroom trick with a paradoxical name. Photographers would contact-print a slightly blurred positive of a negative, sandwich the two, and print through the pair: the blurred mask cancels the smooth tones and lets the differences, the edges, print harder. The digital version keeps the exact logic. Blur a copy of the image, subtract it to isolate everything the blur destroyed, which is by definition the fine detail, then add that detail back on top of the original, scaled to taste.

The blur radius is the soul of the operation, because it decides what counts as detail. A small radius isolates only the finest transitions, pore-level texture and hard edges, and crisps them. A large radius treats whole regions as detail and lifts broad local contrast instead, the look photographers call clarity or structure, where an image gains punch without any visible edge artifacts. The amount then sets how hard the detail is pushed, from a gentle focus assist to a deliberately crunchy, stylized bite.

Video adds one trap that stills mostly forgive: noise. Sensor grain flickers frame to frame, and a naive sharpen amplifies it into a boiling texture across flat areas like sky and skin. The fix is a contrast threshold, a floor below which differences are left alone, so real edges sharpen while low-level noise passes through untouched. The other classic tell of oversharpening is the halo, a bright ring hugging every edge; it appears when the amount outruns the image, and backing off until halos just vanish is the oldest calibration ritual in the craft.

How do you sharpen a video?

What is unsharp masking?

Can sharpening fix a blurry, out-of-focus video?

No. Sharpening raises contrast around edges that survived in the footage; it cannot reconstruct information the lens never resolved. Mildly soft footage reads noticeably crisper because its edges are still there to steepen. Genuinely out-of-focus or motion-smeared material has no edges to work with, and pushing the effect harder produces halos and crunch, not focus.

Why does sharpening make video noise worse?

Because to an unsharp mask, noise is indistinguishable from fine detail: it is small, high-contrast variation, exactly what the filter amplifies. On video it flickers between frames, so amplified grain boils. The cure is a threshold that exempts low-contrast differences, sharpening real edges while leaving flat regions like sky, skin, and shadow untouched.

What causes halos around edges in sharpened footage?

The unsharp mask brightens the light side of every edge and darkens the dark side; that overshoot is the entire mechanism. Pushed too far, the overshoot becomes a visible glow hugging high-contrast edges, the signature of oversharpened material. Large radii at high amounts produce the widest halos, so strong clarity-style sharpening needs the gentlest touch.
