What it does
The look of an analog TV broadcast: soft edges, color bleed, scanlines, and signal noise.
NTSC was the analog color standard of the Americas and Japan for half a century, and it worked by cramming color into the same signal as brightness. That compromise is the source of its artifacts. Color and luma interfere where the signal changes quickly, producing dot crawl, the crawling bead pattern along hard edges, and rainbow shimmer across fine detail. Limited bandwidth softens edges into ringing and smear, and chroma arrives blurrier than the image it colors.
Transmission adds its own layer. A clean studio feed still rings and crawls; a rooftop antenna adds snow, interference patterns, and the slow vertical roll of a hum bar when something leaks into the signal path. The effect exposes both layers separately, so you can dial in anything from "broadcast master" to "channel you could almost get".
It is the sibling of the VHS effect, and the two describe different failures: VHS is mechanical, a tape dragging past spinning heads, while NTSC is electromagnetic, a signal degrading in flight. Period-correct footage usually needs both, an NTSC pass for the broadcast texture and a VHS pass for the recording of it, and they stack in exactly that order.

What is an NTSC effect?
An NTSC effect simulates the artifacts of analog composite television: dot crawl, edge ringing, chroma bleed, snow, and hum interference. It models how the broadcast signal itself degraded, as opposed to VHS effects, which model how tape recordings degraded.
What is dot crawl?
Dot crawl is the moving pattern of small dots along sharp vertical edges in composite video. It happens because brightness and color share one signal and imperfect separation lets them interfere; the checkerboard pattern the interference makes appears to crawl upward along edges.
What is the difference between NTSC and VHS effects?
NTSC artifacts are electromagnetic, produced by the broadcast signal: ringing, dot crawl, snow, hum. VHS artifacts are mechanical, produced by tape and player: wobble, tracking bands, dropouts, head-switching noise. A TV-era look usually stacks both, NTSC for the signal and VHS for the recording.
