What it does

Hue is the part of a color that names it, the angle it occupies on the color wheel, separate from how bright or how saturated it is. A hue shift is a rigid rotation of that wheel: every color moves by the same angle, so the relationships between colors survive intact. Complementary colors stay complementary, a palette that harmonized before the shift still harmonizes after it, just somewhere else on the wheel.
That rigidity is what separates it from a tint. A tint pushes every color toward one color and flattens the palette; a hue rotation moves each color to a different destination and preserves the variety. Neutrals do not move at all, because gray, white, and black carry no hue to rotate, so an image keeps its anchor points while everything colorful migrates. A small nudge works as a grade adjustment, a quarter turn drops a familiar scene into an alien palette, and a designer can audition every recoloring of a graphic in seconds without repainting anything.
The other half of the effect is time. Set the rotation in motion and the palette cycles continuously, the psychedelic staple of analog video synthesizers and light shows. Because the wheel is circular, a full rotation lands exactly where it began, so the animation has no seam: hue cycling is one of the few effects that produces a mathematically perfect loop. Slow, it reads as ambient color weather; fast, it reads as strobe psychedelia.

Common questions
What does a hue shift do?
It rotates every color in the image around the color wheel by the same angle while leaving brightness and saturation untouched. The image keeps its tonal structure and depth, but its entire palette moves together to a new region of the wheel.
Does shifting hue change brightness or contrast?
No. Hue, saturation, and brightness are independent axes, and a hue shift rotates only the first one. Shadows stay dark, highlights stay bright, and saturated colors stay saturated; they just become different colors.
Why don’t white, gray, and black change when I shift hue?
Because they have no hue to rotate. Neutrals sit at the center of the color wheel with zero saturation, so a rotation leaves them exactly where they are. That is a feature: an image keeps its neutral anchor points while everything colorful migrates around them.
What is the difference between a hue shift and a tint?
