Halftone effect

The halftone effect reproduces an image as a grid of dots whose size follows the brightness underneath: large dots where the image is dark, small dots where it is light. It comes from print, where a press can only put down solid ink, and it is why newspaper photos and comic panels dissolve into dots up close. Applied digitally, it turns any image or video into something bold, graphic, and unmistakably print-like.

Halftone was the nineteenth-century answer to a hard problem: how to print a photograph with ink that is either there or not there. Breaking the image into a screen of variable-sized dots lets a single ink fake every tone in between, because the eye averages the dots back into smooth gray at reading distance.

Color printing runs the same trick four times. Cyan, magenta, yellow, and black are each screened at their own angle, and the rotated grids interlock into the rosette pattern you see in a magnified magazine page. When the plates drift out of register, the colors fringe, which is exactly the flaw that gives old comics their charm.

A real halftone effect gives you control of that machinery: the screen angle per channel, the dot shape, the cell size, the tone curve driving the dots, and the way ink bleeds into paper. On video, the screen re-samples every frame, so motion reads through the dots the way it never could in print.

What is a halftone effect?

A halftone effect converts continuous tones into a pattern of dots whose size tracks brightness, imitating how printing presses reproduce photographs with solid ink. Dark areas get large dots, light areas get small ones, and the eye blends them back into smooth tone at a distance.

What is the difference between halftone and dithering?

Both simulate tone with limited color, but halftone varies the size of dots on a regular screen, while dithering varies the density of same-sized pixels. Halftone reads as print; dithering reads as early computer graphics.

Why are halftone screens rotated at different angles?

In CMYK printing each ink is screened at its own angle so the four grids interlock into a small rosette pattern instead of clashing. When two screens sit at nearly the same angle they interfere and produce moire, the wavy pattern printers work hard to avoid.

Where does the comic-book dot look come from?

Mid-century comics were printed on fast, cheap four-color presses with coarse screens, so the dots were big enough to see. Slight misregistration between the plates added the color fringing. Pop artists like Roy Lichtenstein then exaggerated exactly those flaws, which cemented the look.
