What it does
Early computer graphics look: the image is rebuilt from tiny dot patterns and a limited color palette.
Dithering exists because screens and formats used to run out of colors. An early display might offer 2, 16, or 256 of them while a photograph carries millions, and rounding every pixel to the nearest available color produces banding. Dithering distributes that rounding error as a pattern instead, and the eye does the reconstruction for free.
This effect uses ordered dithering: every pixel is thresholded against a repeating matrix, which is what produces the signature crosshatch of Bayer patterns. Ordered dithering is stable from frame to frame, unlike error-diffusion methods that recompute per image, which is exactly why it holds up on video instead of boiling.
The pattern, pixel size, and palette are all choices. Classic black and white reads as a 1980s Macintosh; a four-shade palette reads as a handheld console; a full-color quantize with a fine matrix reads as a lossy GIF from the early web. The pattern can also move, drifting or scrolling between frames, a look that only exists once dithering becomes a live effect rather than a file-format compromise.

What is a dither effect?
A dither effect reduces an image to a limited set of colors and arranges them in fine patterns that simulate the missing shades. Up close you see a texture of individual pixels; at viewing distance the patterns average back into smooth tone, the way early computers displayed photographs.
What is the difference between ordered dithering and error diffusion?
Ordered dithering thresholds each pixel against a fixed repeating matrix, so the pattern is regular and stays put frame to frame. Error diffusion, like Floyd-Steinberg, pushes each pixel’s rounding error onto its neighbors, which looks organic on stills but recomputes differently every frame and shimmers on video. Live video dithering almost always means ordered.
Why did old computers dither everything?
Memory and display hardware limited how many colors could exist on screen at once, sometimes to just black and white. Dithering was the workaround that made photographs displayable at all, and the texture it left behind became the visual identity of that era of computing.
Is dithering the same as halftone?
They solve the same problem in different domains. Halftone comes from print and varies the size of dots on a regular screen; dithering comes from computing and varies the arrangement of same-sized pixels. Halftone reads as newspaper and comics, dithering reads as old software.
